Friday 17th April 2026
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to this, the final term of the academic year. We have started as we mean to go on with a week full of wonder and learning. The children have been finding out all about How the World Works in our final themed week of the year, with a focus on technology and computing. The children have been following instructions, writing algorithims and programmes, and learning how to identify errors and refine the commands to achieve an end goal. In doing so, the children have developed a greater understanding of how technology makes our life better and the realisation that without careful instruction and direction technology can also make life harder. Through their learning the children have developed a range of skills, expanded their vocabulary and has some great fun in their learning. A great way to start the term.
We have extended the deadline for the collection of the Lent Call Sponsored Read money to Wednesaday 22nd April 2026. This means that there is still time for your child to read more books and collect more sponsors and raise more money. As all of the money raised this year is for the benefit of children, both near and far, we are aiming to raise as much as possible.
| A reminder
The rescheduled individual and sibling photos will be taking place this coming Monday 20th April 2026. |
Below is a summary of the learning that has taken place across the school this week.
| Early Years |
| Early Years is welcoming a new and exciting term. This week, the children have been introduced to a new topic, “Minibeasts,” exploring different minibeasts in class and learning about the differences between butterflies and garden tiger moths through the story The ‘Woolly Bear Caterpillar’. In maths, we have been creating very colourful pattern caterpillars, AB patterns in Nursery and ABC patterns in Reception, using different shapes and patterns to create unique caterpillars. |
| Year One |
| As part of Themed Week, in Year One, we have been learning how our school computers are connected as part of a network, understanding that work saved on one computer can be accessed on another. We have also explored the idea of algorithms as simple sets of instructions, using Bee-Bot programmable robot to predict, create and test our own programs. We have begun to understand that instructions need to be clear and accurate, and that mistakes can happen if they are not. With support, we have been identifying and fixing problems in our algorithms, developing important early skills in problem-solving and logical thinking. |
| Year Two |
| Year Two have been developing our understanding of algorithms and programming. We have learned that instructions need to be precise, clear and in the correct order, and that computers require much more exact instructions than humans. We now understand that an algorithm is the written set of instructions, while a program is how these instructions are carried out by a computer.Using tools such as Daisy the Dinosaur and basic Logo programming language, we have been creating more precise programs by including numbered steps and improving how we record our algorithms. We have also been learning to spot when things go wrong by replaying our instructions, and we are becoming more confident at identifying and correcting errors independently. |
| Year Three |
| This week the children put on their ICT hats and learned all about Scratch, creating their own stories and games using coding. We also stepped into our new topic for the term, Ancient Greece, which the children found very interesting and exciting to explore.Well done, Year Three, for a fantastic week of learning! |
| Year Four-Five |
| The children in Year Four and Five have been developing their programming skills by designing and explaining algorithms using diagrams, before creating our own programs to achieve specific goals. Using tools such as Tynker and Flowol 4, we have explored how to simulate real-world systems and have begun writing more advanced programs using selection (if… else… then…). We have also refined our code by introducing repeat commands to improve efficiency. A key focus has been on decomposition—breaking programs down into smaller parts to identify and fix errors with increasing independence. We are beginning to understand how this approach not only supports debugging but also allows code to be reused effectively. We have also explored how programs can respond to a variety of inputs, including sensors, deepening our understanding of how technology interacts with the real world. |
| Year Six |
| This week the children have begun their SATs revision in earnest, demonstrating great focus and learning behaviours. In Maths, they have reviewed multiplying decimals, reading and plotting coordinates in the four quadrants, arithmetic skills and a review of fractions and decimals. In English, they have been focussing on reading. Discussing the text as a class in detail before answering and the reverse, looking through the questions and understanding how to answer them before reading and answering in pairs. Keep up the good work. |
Head Teacher awards were presented to the following children in this week’s celebration assembly.
The house point totals for this week are:
| GARRISON | 12 | AUGUSTINE | 6 |
| FRANKLIN | 14 | DICKENS | 18 |
On a final note, attached you will find not only the dates for the term ahead, but the dates for the upcoming academic year; hard copies of both are available from the school office and can be found on our website.
Kind regards
Mrs Warland
