Hello Reception,

The end of the school year is nearly here and that means that today is the last of the daily blogs! I have had so much fun uploading and sharing some ideas with you and hopefully you have too!

Feel free to revisit the blogs at any point to revise work or use them as inspiration for some fun summer activities.

Phonics activity

Over the summer please continue to practise your phonics, revising your Phase 3 sounds and Phase 3 and 4 tricky words:

Here are the flashcards to practise your sounds:

PHONICS FLASHCARD GAME

Make sure you are reading daily with your children and encouraging them to write to allow them to apply this knowledge.

Literacy activity

Following on from yesterday, have another discussion about the superhero you designed, look at the picture they drew and discuss their various features. Once they can remember, label the superhero, writing their name, labelling any powers they have and elements of their costume. You could even write a short story that involves them or a sentence describing them. Allow your children to use their phonics and try not to correct every spelling, at this age, spelling words phonetically plausibly (when read aloud it sounds like the word) then that is fine. Encourage their efforts and take breaks if needed!

Please send me photos of your superheros to admin@sjtdprimary.org.uk

Maths activity

Please finish working throuhg the Recpeiton activities in the maths booket.

Make sure you are reading daily with your children and encouraging them to write to allow them to apply this knowledge.

Literacy activity

For the next two days we are going to be designing our own superhero inspired by the story Superheroes – All sorts that we have been reading.

Today encourage your child to think of their own superhero.

You can ask them key questions like:

‘What would your superhero be called?’

‘What would their superhero power be?’

‘What makes them special?’

‘What is their superhero costume?’

Help your child to draw their superhero, adding as much detail as they can. Tomorrow we will be labelling them.

Maths activity

We are continuing to work through this weeks maths booklet, you do not need to complete the Year 1 activities unless you and your child are very confident to do it.

As you have been doing such wonderful writing this week, I would like you to use today to share stories. Find some of your favourite books and enjoy them together. Grown-ups can read to children, children can read to their grown-ups.

You could use toys to act out the story, giving your characters different voices and actions.

You could even make up your own stories, use puppets or listen to stories in video or audio format.

It is important to instil a love of reading into your children and what better way to do this than sharing their favourite stories with their loved ones.

Maths activity

This is the last day of maths activities related to the story How Many Legs? .

Read/listen to it once more here:

Start by asking your child “What good things can you remember from this year?”

Allow them to share their experiences of the school year.

Then ask “What are you looking forward to in Year 1?”

Pose the question “What targets have you achieved this year?” (you can help them relate this to reading, writing, maths or other personal targets)

Ask “What is one thing would you like to do better next year?”

You might like to create a poster or something similar with the goal for Year 1 so they can reflect on it throughout next year.

Hello Reception,

Welcome to a new week! I hope you had a lovely weekend.

Lemon juice secret messages

1. Add about 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of lemon juice to the cup. Fresh squeezed or bottled juice will work just fine.

2. Soak an end of the cotton swab or put the paint brush into the lemon juice. You’ll use this to write your message.

3. Write your message on the plain paper. You’ll be able to see it as long as the paper is wet so let the lemon-juice message dry completely.

There’s no rush to revealing the message but when it comes time to read it, there are several methods of heat sources. NOTE: If you choose the open flame method, make sure an adult helps out. Setting the message and/or yourself on fire are not what you want to do. Whichever method you choose, start at the bottom of the message and work your way up since heat rises.

Here are some options:

You can hold the paper over an incandescent light bulb with OK results. It may be hard to tell if the bulb is hot enough, so you may not kow whether your paper is blank or whether you just can’t see the message yet.

You can “iron” your paper but don’t use the steam setting. This may be the best method. A clean rag between the iron and the paper helps keep the iron’s hot surface clean.

Hold the paper over a hot burner on a stove. There will be some distortion of the paper as it gets hot and the message appears. Watch your fingers!

You can use a hairdryer on a hot setting.

Here is a video if you want to see how it is done:

Have fun and stay safe!
